On our first trip to Italy, as I recently found recounted in my travel journal, my standards for personal hygiene had greatly diminished. On a hike outside of San Gimignano, I found myself rubbing rosemary under my arms to try to help the situation. That's probably better than using fennel stalks to try to alleviate the smell, but even the rosemary didn't work the wonders I had hoped. We hiked out past this vineyard, leaves just beginning to push through and shoots just thinking about entwining themselves around their trellises in order to start the growing season and, presumably, to bring us the well-known Vernaccia di San Gimignano to drink away any memory of personal stankiness.
